Anarchy
“Chey, I met you thirteen years ago this coming August, and maybe 13 is meant to be an unlucky number...but I’m hoping we’ve already used up all our bad luck. You and I already went through it all together: Good and bad, joy and sorrow, sickness and health. Death even already failed to part us: I already died. And as soon as my heart started beating again it was back to beating for you. Every second of the bad, the sorrow, and the sickness was worth having you in my life, and I would go through it all again to keep you with me.
With the hands life dealt each of us, we both ended up having to be survivors—but you chose to be a healer, too: From the moment I met you, you’ve inspired me with your empathy and hope, and how openly you offer both to every single person you meet. It’s because of knowing you and loving you that I’ve become the man I am now; a man I’m proud to be. As it so happens I only have the name I go by because you gave it to me, and I, Anarchy Keystone, promise that as your husband I intend to keep learning from you how to be the most loving person I can be.
I also promise to hold you as you fall asleep; to keep you close and warm in winter like when we were kids. I promise to listen to you, laugh with you, and to keep you safe. I promise that we will always be on equal ground. And I promise to defend your fashion choices, even when they’re bad.”
(pause to acknowledge laughter and let Chey make exaggerated “What, MINE?” expression + theatrical hand-to-chest)
“I love you, and have loved you, and will love you. Infinitely. I can’t wait to share the rest of my life with you.”
[Chey pretends he’s not tearing up and shifts his weight from foot to foot while smiling and blinking a bit, finally gets himself together and looks at his vows]

“Anthony Arland Keystone, you had a dweeb name when we first met.”
(laughter)
“But out west, in a boxcar, I helped you find your real name...and you’ve lived up to it. ‘Anarchy’ isn’t about chaos or violence, like people think it is. It’s about the idea that all people are equal, and that human beings both can—and will—take care of one another: Anarchism in its purest form is a belief that humanity is, at its core, good. You’re an example of that goodness, my love, and you give me hope for all the world. We both went through hell, and for both of us, pieces of that hell tried to cling. But you’ve always held yourself true to your own core morals, and when you fall short you put the effort in to change. You haven’t let your history hold you back or make you anything less than the strong, gentle, kind-hearted man in front of me.
You inspire me, and if I helped you find yourself, then you’ve helped me stay myself: You give me the faith and the drive to keep loving, and when I need strength I only need to think of you to find it. I love you with all my heart, and have since I was thirteen years old—so as it turns out, 13 could be my lucky number. I know that I can trust you in all of your promises, and for me...I promise to always remind you of spring when the winters seem long and dark. I promise to be light as best I can and to always believe in you. Most of all I promise to stay, to be here, whatever comes: To be by your side, and in your arms, and to fall asleep with my head on your chest, just like when we were kids.
Death can’t part us; as you said, it already failed once. In this life I found you and loved you again; in the next life I will find you and love you again. ‘For,’ as E.E. Cummings wrote, ‘you are and I am and we are (above and under all possible worlds) in love.’”
